Description: Ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1) is a 147-amino acid calcium-binding protein involved in the rearrangement of the actin cytoskeleton during cell movement and phagocytosis1. Iba1 is a commonly used marker for microglial cells and due to being expressed in almost all sub-populations of cells of monocyte/macrophage lineage has been recognized as a pan-macrophage marker2. Iba1 has been shown to be a useful marker of cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage in canine and feline inflammatory, proliferative and neoplastic disorders and for the differentiation between histiocytic tumors and other round cell tumor and melanomas3,4,5.
